In the course of some computer malfunctions I lost a letter from a person in Southampton who knew George at the Atherely Club. She remembers him as a kindly man, known as Tid. Maybe the letter will turn up...sometime.

August 8, 2018:

Hello Ann:

Good old Uncle George, [1889-1972] my Dad's brother! He was as deaf as a door nail and I had no idea he served in the armed forces... he was not the greatest conversationalist! He was a bachelor, a groundskeeper at the local lawn bowing club. Apparently very good at his job.

He had the odd habit of pouring his too hot tea into his saucer, blowing same and then drinking...not done in the best of circles, wot!

I think three other brothers served in the armed forces... Will, Bertie and Charles who was killed..Harry J and his wife Emma Louise Newman were their parents.

And, I served in the Grenadier Guards and a platoon pictures was taken

and guess [not hard!] how they spelt my name...yes, indeed. Proof is attached!

Regards,
John T

August 8, 2018-- from Ann Titheradge

I found this record the other day and although the name says George Harold Tidbridge I think this is your great uncle.

It’s the record of him joining the RFC and transferring to the RAF in world war 1.

Let me know if you agree this is really a Tidridge.

Regards

Ann

George's transfer papers from the Army to the RAF...note the spelling of the last name
